As many people will know, the impact of the COVID-19 virus has had a severe impact on restaurants all over the country.

This has required the Tiffin Group to restructure and reshape its whole business. Tiffin @ the Pier has always been particularly reliant on the summer trade to deliver profitability and the loss of this business, coupled with likely trends in the longer term, has meant that Tiffin have been obliged to terminate their lease earlier than anticipated. Tiffin @ the Pier, already closed because of ‘lockdown’, will therefore cease trading for good on the 31st May.

Nick Wring said;  “We would like to thank the Directors for their understanding and measured approach during these difficult discussions. We are working collaboratively with them to ensure a smooth transition. Additionally, we thank all the Pier supporters for their custom over these past five years. Tiffin Group will continue to look for ways to support the Pier from its other operating venues in the UK and Jersey which will remain ready to open once we are allowed to do so. We wish the Pier good fortune as we all navigate these challenging times.”

Phil Curme, Chair of the Clevedon Pier & Heritage Trust Board, said;  “It is sad that our partnership with Tiffin has come to an end. We are, of course, concerned that the closure will have a significant impact on the Pier’s finances, but fully understand the reasons why Nick and Linda have had to make this difficult decision.”

The Trust is currently investigating how and when to reopen the Pier in a safe way, probably relying initially on an outdoors only approach. It is hoped that the cafe can be reopened in some form when circumstances return to normal, which is unlikely to be before the end of the year. For now the Board’s focus is on the safety of its staff, volunteers and customers and how to generate the funds needed to deliver its vital maintenance programme.

The rent payments from Tiffin were the Pier’s largest source of income after ticket sales, so with both of these now cut off, if you want to help the Pier fund its maintenance programme, please do so here:
