The campaign to save Clevedon Pier from demolition in the late 1970s was a huge community effort involving many local people. The late Tony Wring  will be remembered for the important role he played, in helping to ensure that the Pier would survive. Today, we welcomed various members of the Wring family including Tony’s widow, Carole, and son Nick, on to the Pier for the unveiling of a new commemorative plaque. The words on the plaque sum up Tony’s contribution nicely.

Anthony M. Wring. C.Eng, MIET recognised this Pier’s importance in time and place, devoted skill and passion to raising awareness nationally – gathering support and facts for the Public Inquiry.

Tony commissioned the scale-model of Clevedon Pier which was used at the 1980 Public Inquiry (an Inquiry which resulted in the local authority not being allowed to demolish what was left of the Pier). The model, along with other documents covering the campaign to save the Pier, is held in our Community Archive.

Glass Box: A New Chapter Begins

After ten years, the Glass Box is getting a new chapter. The Glass Box has been an important part of the Pier since it opened in 2016, welcoming visitors for food, drinks and special events. But a lot has changed over the past decade, from visitor expectations and food trends to the costs of running hospitality businesses. So, from Tuesday 25 August, the Glass Box will close to day-to-day trading while we take the opportunity to review and refresh the offer. This is not a decision we’ve taken lightly. We want to make sure the Glass Box continues to be a welcoming
