Clevedon Pier & Heritage Trust Wins Magnox Support

Clevedon Pier & Heritage Trust has received over £800 from Magnox to develop resources to enable the delivery of an exciting new Learning and Outreach Programme at Clevedon’s Community Pier. The resources will engage visiting schools and youth groups to discover the moving geography of the Severn Estuary and the Bristol Channel bringing the Pier environment to life in the community.

Working with professionals from the UK Hydrographics Office, the Bristol Pilots and utilising the Clevedon Pier archive, the Estuary charts have been created to support learners in gaining a deeper insight into the Pier’s surrounding environment on location from the deck a quarter of a mile out to sea at the Pier Head with the Welsh and English coastline right in front of them. The resources will also be used to deliver outreach within the community.

Commenting on the award, Abbie Edbrooke, Heritage & Outreach Officer Clevedon Pier said: “We are thrilled to have received generous sponsorship of our stunning new giant 3m x 2m nautical charts. In trials of the resource on location, we have already been inundated with people eager to discover the fascinating, ever changing geography of the unique Severn Estuary. Schools are already booking the resource and we can’t wait to fascinate young people and with the charts at the Pier Head.”

Peter Montague, Closure Director at Hinkley Point A, said: “As part of our commitment to promoting skills and educational projects it’s a pleasure to be able to support such a recognisable landmark in our region. Via our socio-economic funding, Clevedon Pier provided us with a perfect opportunity to help local school children to learn more about local history and their coastal surroundings.”
